Session 3
WORLD EVENTS
1) Upkeep and Ship Repairs
With the start of a new week, again, Marissa returns with supplies and then hands out the payment from the protection mission. (-3 Credits (8 crew members)).
2) Assign/Resolve Crew Tasks
Snap said he was headed to the trader to find new gear (Trade).
Mason and Annie said they were taking a walk (Explore).
Marissa said She would spend the day trying to get some of the damaged gear back into operation. Spacer said he would be the parts runner if she needed one (Repair).
The newcomer Lexi said she was headed to the desert to practice her marksmanship but should be back late afternoon (Train).
Nik, the other new member said he was headed to the gym to pick a fight or two. (Train).
3-5) Determine Job Offers, Assign Equipment, Resolve Rumors
Later that evening…
When Snap walked in Marissa said “I guess you struck out at the trader. Huh?” Snap replied “Only if trading those scrap pistols for 6 credits means I struck out!” he smirked. “How the hell did you get 6 credits for scrap pistols? She asked.
“I didn't.” He replied.
“All I could get for those scrap pistols was more junk. But I'm pretty sure the stuff was stolen or something (contraband) but I was able to find another trader who gave me the 6 credits for the junk I got from the first guy.” “Good job!” Exclaimed Marissa
Mason arrived a few hours after Snap and said that Hallett, Alexandre contacted him today and asked that he stop by when he's in the neighborhood that next time. Marissa said that he paid well the last time so maybe you should go talk with him tomorrow. Mason said he was thinking the same thing and said he would go see him when his office opened in the morning.
Lexi arrived just after Mason and quietly sat down. When Mason finished his discussion with Marissa she started asking questions about the groups previous mission involving Hallett, Alexandre. Mason and Marissa gave her the highlights of the mission.
Afterwards Lexi said “Interesting…. I never knew Alex had any kids. Be careful with that one Mason.”
He said “If you have more information about Hallett, Alexandre, let's hear it.”
“That's all I'm going to say for now. Just be careful.” she said.
About that time Nik walks through the door looking a bit worse for wear. “I guess you found someone to fight. Huh Nik?” said Snap.
Nik said “Oh Yeah! One guy and his three buddies. Afterwards we all went to The Lynx for some drinks. Great bunch of guys even if they do cheat!”
Well after everyone was back, Spacer walks in. As he's closing the door he said ”Mason, have I got news for you.“ with the biggest grin on his face.”
“I have intel that could lead us to Durrance.” (An opportunity mission with the objective of Access was rolled)
That got everyone's attention at that point.
“Go on.” said Mason
Spacer continued. While he was at the Spaceport picking up parts (+1 Credit for extra roll for Repair) for Marissa, he was talking up the local techies. One thing led to another and before long the drinks started flowing. One of the guys asked if anyone noticed how a lot of the port fees have been reduced or done away with since Durrance was gone. Before he left it was revealed that the PortMaster Rickert was recently placed on administrative leave.
Scuttlebutt around the port-terminal is that Durrance and Rickert were taking bribes from several locals to look the other way when certain off world shipments arrived in port. Durrance had a ledger system created that Rickert would use to record the transactions to ensure Durrance got his cut. Rumor is that when Durrance was transferred off world, Rickert stopped paying him after a few months.
Rickert assumed Durrance wouldn't say anything, due to his involvement, and he would just go away. However, a few weeks ago, Provost Abram received word from Unity's Internal Affairs that Rickert was under investigation for bribery and should be placed under house arrest and not allowed to leave area.
Marissa asked “Just how credible is this information you're talking about. Sounds a bit far-fetched for someone like Rickert.
Spacer said the guy telling him this, was part of the forensics team at the SpacePort. He said they found the terminal Rickert used to access the ledger system. Odd thing is, the only other login accessing the ledger wasn't Durrance. It was someone named Morland. There is no one on Nimbos 9 by the name of Carlos Morland. Since Durrance controlled all aspects of life on Nimbos 9 and nothing or no one moved without him knowing about it, speculation is that Morland is an alias Durrance used. Another forensics team is combing through the Garrison's systems looking for more evidence of this Morland's involvement.
At that point, Spacer shifted into “blah, blah, blah” tech talk until Snap spoke up and asked, “How do we turn this worthless information into credits? or are we done here?”
Spacer said that he was just getting to that part. “While not actually a paying job, per se, the information is very valuable. To us!”
”Rickert sent someone funds for several months until he got greedy.“ Spacer said. “If we can get to that terminal at the space-port and gain access to that ledger, I bet it will give us a lead to where Durrance is.”
“Or would you prefer to babysit some CEO's snotnosed kid?” Spacer asked with a grin.
Mason spoke up and said “I'll take some information on Durrance over just about anything at this point. This is the best lead we've had to date. Spacer make the arraignments and let's meet back here at 2000 hours to go over the mission details. Let's do this tonight. The sooner the better.”
“I'll take care of it boss.” said Spacer
TABLETOP BATTLE
Spacer made the arraignments, and as outlined during the mission briefing, the group met just after midnight at warehouse Omega-7 near the spaceport. Snap and Spacer had located several locations of egress into the building by the time Mason and Marissa arrived. They were still arguing about which location would be better suited for entry when Mason opened the door closest to them. Marissa said, “I'm pretty sure I heard voices as you opened the door. I doubt we're the only ones here!” “Move in and take cover where you can until I get the Bot deployed,” Mason ordered. (Group failed to Seize the Initiative with a measly combined roll of 4 )
ROUND 1
Sure enough, the group is not alone. The sounds of multiple individuals scurrying for cover could be heard from the far end of the warehouse. Just as the group finds cover, multiple shots from some sort of Military Rifle, from multiple locations, ring out from the far end. One round slams into the crate in front of Mason. Another one slams into the equipment case in front of Snap as another one ricochets off a stair tread also near Mason.
Marissa moves into cover behind a support girder, giving her a clear shot at the assailant (Starport Scum) who just fired at Mason. She quickly fires two shots at the scumbag. The first shot is wide left and penetrated the storage container behind him. The second shot however found its mark, shattering the scumbag's rifle and filling his face with the shrapnel. “One on the left is down!” Marissa exclaimed over the Comms.
“Where do you think you're going Butthead!” Exclaimed Snap as his Rattle Gun burped three rounds downrange. The guy sneaking around the storage container on the right side (a Starport Scum Specialist) never saw them coming as 2 of the three high-caliber rounds ripped through his chest, sending him hurtling back into the storage container where his body slumped to the ground. “That's two down.” He said.
Spacer spoke up and said “Hey, looks like they've had enough. That dude just took off!” (Since the Deployment Condition was “Bitter Struggle”, only 1 enemy failed his morale check while the others remained steadfast)
ROUND 2
“Not all of them.” Exclaimed Mason as he aimed at another one (a Starport Scum Lieutenant) sneaking alongside the storage container where his buddy laid in a pool of blood. Two bolts of white-hot plasma erupted from Mason's Plasma Rifle, both shots, a bit lower than Mason liked, were effective, nonetheless. The first shot took his right lower leg off and while the scumbag was falling to the ground the second bolt removed his head from his body.
“Vicious there Boss!” said Snap as he powered up his Rattle Gun once more. The first 2 rounds created a hole big enough in the guy's chest that the third missed completely because there was nothing in the center of his chest to hit.
“Damn! Now, who's being vicious!” Said Marissa.
POST BATTLE ACTIVITIES
“I think that's all of them.” Said Mason. ”Spacer, find that terminal, and let's get out of here as fast as possible“.
Spacer wasted no time in bolting up the stairs towards the office. Snap, and Marissa quickly behind him. Mason took up a defensive posture at the bottom of the stairs just in case the guy who bolted decided to return. Within a few minutes, Spacer had the data they came for and the group quietly exited the build through the back entrance.
On the way by, Spacer checked the pockets of a scumbag and found a few credit chips. “Nice!” he exclaimed (due to the Criminal Elements enemy type, the group earned 2 additional credits). “Hey Boss, this guy has some Credit Chips on him. Maybe others do as well.”
“Spread out and check for other stuff we can use or sell.” Exclaimed Mason.
Marissa went back to the office and rummaged through the desks and cabinets. She located several odd, alien-looking, items. Possibly devices of some sort or maybe just souvenirs or maybe trinkets. She pocketed them anyway (“Mysterious Items” from the Gather the Loot activity which Resulted in earning 2 additional Story Points). The rest of the group searched the remainder of the warehouse. In total, the group recovered Credit Chips totaling 8 credits (Get Paid! Activity), and enough scrap to sell for 3 more Credits (Battlefield Finds activity). PLUS, data that hopefully, points them in the direction of Provost Durrance
While the remainder of the group headed back to the office, Mason headed to the spaceport in search of a starship that might suit their needs. They would need transportation off this rock if the data they found proved useful. As in previous attempts, the Shipbroker wanted over 100 credits for anything decent. However, this time, the broker said he had recently acquired several salvaged ships, and perhaps Mason could find something in that lot to suit his purpose and price. Mason told him if there wasn't anything in the lot less than 20 Credits, he wasn't interested. “I just so happen to have something that might interest you then. I'll let you have it 20 Credits.” The broker said.
“Let's see what you have!”
Following the guy to the back lot, Mason truly understands why the guy bought these for salvage. Pure junk he thought to himself. The broker walked to the back of the lot, approached a side cargo door of a behemoth of a transport vessel, and said “Most of these are salvage. But, we found this while taking inventory, that might interest you.” He released a lever and the cargo door opened, revealing a small, sleek alien-looking vessel (rolled up a Strange Alien Vessel on the Ship Table). “and I'll let you have this beauty for only 20 Credits.”

“It looks in good shape, might even suit our immediate needs, but seems a bit small for my crew. I assume you've checked out the impulse and warp engines and they're in good shape.” Mason said.
The broker replied “An engineer down at the Spaceport owed me a favor so he checked all the systems and he said he found no issues at all. He also said the ship appeared to be of Teratet origin. Not sure how it got here. The closest Teratet port is over a hundred parsecs away.”
“I see,” said Mason.
“So, will you be financing this little beauty and taking it home today?” asked the broker.
“As I said, I'm not sure there is enough room for my crew and our gear,” Mason replied.
“How about this,” Mason said. “You have fabrication services here. Right?”
“Of course, we do.” The broker replied.
Mason said “No financing. I'll give you 17 Credits today. PLUS, 35 additional credits in a few weeks, provided you reconfigure the interior area (Living Quarters Ship Upgrade) for my crew and upgrade the shield generators (Improved Shielding Ship Upgrade).” (Since the RAW states that the party starts with a ship and I opted to stay planetside through the first 5 missions, I've house-ruled the 17 credits would be as though I rolled up a ship upon character creation. Since you can only apply one ship upgrade per campaign turn, the two turns allow the group to finish the outstanding patron missions on this world before they explore the rest of the galaxy.)
“That's a lot of work in a short amount of time.” The broker said.
“If you can't do it, that's fine. We'll take the next transport off world and find someone else who wants our credits!” Mason exclaimed
“Fine!” sighed the broker. “You pay me 17 credits now and come back in 2 weeks and you pay me 35 more credits for the modifications.”
“Deal!” said Mason. They haggled out the details of the modifications and he paid the man the 17 credits, ensuring he got a signed contract. He was a used ship salesman after all! Mason left with a contract in hand and headed back to the office. Excited to tell the group that they had a ship and would soon be leaving this rock!
Returning to the office, Mason sees everyone playing with some new toys. “How much did that cost us!” he exclaimed.
Marissa spoke up and said “Nothing, I ran into Faraday at the market earlier. Told him to pay up with the remainder of what he owed us for that job last year, or I was gonna remove his private parts with my pistol! He said he would give me some gear and swore they were legit.” Spacer smiled and said “I scanned all of them and they seem good to go. I'll admit, I was sure they would be gene-locked but they're not.”
“Good.” Mason said. “We need all the credits we can get in the next two weeks. Sell anything we don't need. We have a ship!”
Everyone seemed genuinely excited about leaving Nimbos 9, even Spacer was reconsidering whether he really wanted to stay on Nimbos 9 or not.
Marissa then told Mason that Grim was released from Dr. Drewry's and that he wanted to speak with him as soon as it was convenient.
Mason found him at The Lynx staring into a full glass of Sozarian Ale. The two talked for hours but ultimately, Mason was unable to change Grim's mind. He said he was leaving to try and rectify things between himself and his father, provided he could find him and that he was still alive. Mason told him he respected that decision and wished him well. Mason left Grim, still staring into that full class of Sozarian Ale.
NOTE: Experience and Character Upgrades: Mason earned enough XP with this battle to increase his Toughness to 5 as did Marissa and Snap. Spacer earned enough to increase his Reactions to 2. – The Storyteller
