Early Life

Mason grew up on Nimbos 9. A remote mining planet, deep in the Fringe. The Rebus Colony, as well as most other mining colonies in the Fringe, are run by the Epsilon Sigma Mining Corporation, a subsidiary of the Epsilon Sigma Consortium (Epsilon Sigma). Epsilon Sigma runs mining and manufacturing operations throughout most of the known universe and provides the Unity forces with most of their arms and armaments. Due to its galactic-reach, Epsilon Sigma controls most aspects of life on Nimbos 9..

Mason's life was one disaster after another, starting with the death of his mother at the time of his birth, to his dad dying in a mining accident when he was 10. Fortune smiled upon Mason and his older sister Marissa for a short, brief moment when their quad neighbor, the Gambys took a liking to them after their mother died. Mrs. Gamby would look out for them when their father worked to ensure they were fed and properly clothed. When their father died, the Gambys insisted they move in with them before the housing authority kicked them to the streets. When Marissa was old enough, Mr. Gamby gave her a job in the Epsilon Sigma company store that he ran and taught her to be the shrewd businesswoman she is today.

As Mason entered his teenage years, and as much as they tried, Marissa and the Gambys were unable to prevent Mason from falling in with the “wrong crowd”. It wasn't long before he was getting into mischief. The kind of mischief that would lead to changed lives and lifelong passions.

Everything Changed

It was a night that started like any other in the lower wards, bored teenagers roaming the streets and back alleys, looking for trouble. It did not take long for trouble to find them.

“A cruiser. A really fancy cruiser to boot! What was a cruiser like that doing in this part of town? A new Pill Lord? Nah, way too fancy. A harem boss, maybe, but not with that type of heat standing watch. An officer maybe. Why would an Eps officer be in this part of town!”.

It wasn't long before the bragging and the dares started. Finally, Toby said he would do it. He would jack the Eps fancy new ride but if he did, he wanted to call the shots at the next Pahwu match. That just intensified the bragging and dares until Mason was chosen as Toby's diversion. They were like brothers after all. Brothers help brothers.

Toby moved into position and Mason made his way slowly down the street, in full view of the guard. Mason quickly started with the taunts and soon the guard was hot on his heels. The pair hadn't run a block before the cheering and screaming filled the night air. Toby was already in the cruiser when the guard did a 180 and started running back towards the vehicle. The fun and games were over once the first shot was fired from the guard's hand cannon. As the guard reached the cruiser's door, it fired up and sped away into the night. Toby did it! He actually stole the blasted thing!

Within 15-minutes the night sky was ablaze with searchlights from the Ep gunships, all looking for Toby. The entire lower-wards were crawling with Eps but by dawn, the cruiser was found wrecked and abandoned at the Delta mine.

The group held up at their base in the abandoned Gama-Delta mine. They got word that Toby and Mason were identified through security camera footage but the others were not persons of interest. The Eps spent weeks combing the city for the pair before kicking in the door at the Gama-Delta mine.

The pair were cuffed, hooded, and loaded into separate vehicles for transportation. Within hours Mason was released with a stern warning and his first of many Social Status Indicator (SSI) negative marks. Mason did not see Toby again until the day his life changed forever.

Three days following his release, a mandatory Assembly was called by the area's quasi overseer, Provost Durrance. All citizens were to report to the assemblage area at 5 pm for an important announcement by the Provost himself. Rumors abound from the Provost's retirement to the entire population being relocated to another world. It wasn't until the assemblage that the citizens understood the graveness of the situation. Mason arrived with his friends and quickly found marissa. They watched in confusion as the entire Eps Security Force from the garrison emptied into the assembly area, forming a wall of soldiers on 3-sides of a large stage. Towards the rear of the stage was erected a 6-foot wide, 8-foot tall concrete wall.

A few moments later, on the far side of the area, a large hanger door opened and the Provost himself walked out followed by a group of 9 masked soldiers armed with Marksman's Rifles. The soldiers marched in unison to the center of the stage and stopped. With a loud thump, the soldiers turned to face the concrete wall. That is when the crowd first noticed the young boy, standing blindfolded and restrained against the center of the wall. The crowd quickly erupted with anger but just as quickly, the soldiers beat them back with Suppression Mauls.

The Provost explained to the crowd that this “man” was at the center of a terrorist cell that was sympathetic to the Converted and was planning attacks against their very own Rebus Colony. Several sections of the crowd once again erupted with anger but once again were beaten back by the Suppression Mauls.

With that announcement, the Provost turned and barked orders to his goon squad. The air then filled with gunfire, teargas, screams, and wailing. At that moment, Mason's life was forever changed. Mason and Toby both were 15 years of age.

Provost Durrance issued a Holo-Vid within hours of the execution outlining the charges and “proof” against his friend as the mastermind of a “home-grown” terrorist sympathizer cell for the Converted. Mason vowed he would revenge his friend's murder or die trying.

Currently

Mason and a few others spent the remainder of their teenage years causing as much grief for the Provost as they could. The annual Remembrance Day was finally outlawed as gatherings would routinely turn violent. Five years ago a new provost was appointed to the Rebus Colony but with no justice in sight, Mason and his group increased their activities, causing even more havoc on mining operations all over Nimbos 9.

Although publicly reported as an accident, the supply train mishap inside the spaceport last year was Mason's brainchild and shunted mining operations at the Rebus Colony for months. Epsilon Sigma retaliated by increasing the size of the security forces on the planet. Clashes between the group and the EPs have escalated in recent months to the point that the gang is planning its biggest operation to date. The group is planning to steal a freighter from the spaceport and take the fight directly to Epsilon Sigma in Core-Space if need be.
