Deston Harwood

Sold by parents to slavers at a young age. Deston grew up quickly. Grew tough, quickly. He was often sold and resold to various freighter captains looking for cheap labor. That is until the day he'd had enough. Starting a riot in the slave market that day, he escaped the city and wandered the wilderness, staying one step ahead of the slavers.
Months passed and then years. Eventually, they stopped looking for him. He would take odd jobs here and there to survive but his big break came when he saw a recruitment poster for the Epsilon Sigma Security Force. He signed up immediately and was trained in heavy weaponry and riot-control devices. He finally felt like he belonged. Order out of chaos. Comradery and sense of purpose. This was his life's destiny, or so he thought.
Shortly after his training, he was posted to the remote mining planet Nimbos 9, deep in the fringe. Moving from mining colony to mining colony on the planet, his day was filled with patrol after patrol. The work was easy at first but then came the grumblings from the workers. He did not always agree with their complaints nor the Epsilon Sigma policies, but at first, he firmly believed the Security Force was there to protect the workers and all civilians. But soon enough he began to feel HE was the oppressor and that HE was part of the worker's problems. HE had become the slaver, oppressing the slaves into submission. Guilt gripped him tightly.
Provost Durrance handpicked a squad of his best men for a special day, or that's what he told them as they stood in the assembly hall just before the public assemblage. They were each handpicked by him due to their loyalty and dedication to the mission of the security forces. This honor, this privilege, bestowed upon them this day would solidify advancement within the Epsilon Sigma Security Force. The Provost said he would see to that personally. It's also the day that ultimately changed Deston's life forever. Even more so than when he was first sold into slavery.
The gathered crowd started to swell by the time the Provost lead his elite squad in front of them. The Provost addressed the crowd which only incited them further, leading the riot squads to step in to return order. Facing the crowd of angry citizens, Deston could feel his pounding heartbeat in his head, drowning out the crowd. From pure muscle reflex, Deston performed an about-face in unison with his squad. As his eyes focused on the makeshift concrete wall thirty feet away, Deston immediately saw the object of the crowd's anger and the purpose of his being there.
A boy!
A boy, blindfolded and restrained. Not more than 15 years old. Deston had been chosen for an execution squad. The execution of a child. What had he done to deserve this punishment? His mind racing to remember details of recent events that would warrant this.
READY! Shouted the Provost above the noise of the crowd. Deston raised his Marksman's Rifle. His mind grasping for facts.
AIM! Came another shout from the Provost. Deston instinctively aimed through the sights of his weapon. His mind exploded with emotion as he realized the boy in his sights was the same boy caught just a few days earlier joyriding in the Provost's cruiser. Was the Provost actually going to kill this child for simply stealing his car?
Deston lowered his rifle as the command FIRE! was given only moments before the shots rang out. Deston spun around to object to the Provost's order but was met by the butt of a rifle.
Deston awoke sometime later in total darkness. He still recognized his location even in the darkness. Steel floor, steel walls, locked steel door. The isolation block of the Security Force Garrison. For 5-years, the garrison jail was his home. It was not until provost_abram replaced Provost Durrance that he was allowed to speak to a superior officer. provost_abram simply told him that his services were no longer needed and that he was being released from service due to insubordination. Upon objection, Deston was told to drop the matter and not pursue it further.
Once outside, Deston began piecing together what took place in the last 5-years. Eventually, he tracked down Mason and pledged his allegiance to his cause. He hasn't looked back.
