They needed a reason and the money necessary in order to leave the starting planet. With that said, in the Post-Battle Events of Turn 3, the crew had the need and the money to purchase their first ship, **The Grey Byrd**. From a story point-of-view, they would not be taking possession of the ship until after Turn 5 in order for the ship upgrades to be installed prior to them leaving the planet.
